Communication - a moving target
English and German are both living languages that constantly absorb new terminology. German is absorbing so many English terms that translators frequently joke about "Neudeutsch", but did you know that English also has absorbed quite a few German words? Furthermore, in both languages new words and phrases (parthenotes: What's that?) are constantly added. ALSC is committed to continuous learning and always checks current usage (See New Terminology page). Constant change is one reason why human translators will not become obsolete any time soon, even if all currently used terms and phrases were to be stored in a giant computer. A second reason is the fact that "words are defined by the company they keep" (Timothy R. Hunt) - context is everything, and computers don't understand context very well.
Computers have nevertheless changed the translation business. Besides honing their language skills, translators now also have to master a variety of word processing, desktop publishing, and translation memory programs. Click here for ALSC's take on Computers and Translation.
