Lt. Joseph B. Maloney
The co-pilot, or Flight Engineer, was from Waterbury,
Connecticut. Lt. Joseph B. Maloney was the son of a prominent
physician of that city. He had graduated from Villanova College
in Pennsylvania, and after graduation worked for a while for his
uncle's newspaper in Waterbury. This was not challenging enough,
so with the war in Europe escalating and air power becoming more
important, Maloney enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He was
accepted as an Army flying cadet in early 1940, one of the first
from Waterbury. He trained in Georgia and Texas and was graduated
from the advanced flying school at Maxwell Field, Alabama, where
he received his wings and his commission. From Alabama, he was
assigned to the 33rd Bomber Squadron at Langley Field, VA. This
squadron of B-26s was one of the first to leave Langley Field on
December 8, 1941, for assignment to the 4th Air Force Command in
California. From here, they were to be sent to the south Pacific.
